Happy Birthday Mary

I couldn’t let today pass without celebrating a special woman. Today is Sister Mary Dower’s birthday. I met Mary on January 3, 2023 when I went to explore the Virginia Waters Contemplative Centre that I had heard about. I didn’t realize it was a residence where three presentation sisters live. This morning, there were no cars in the parking lot when I pulled in so I got out of the car and was about to go look in the windows when a red Toyota tercel pulled in and out popped Sister Mary. She introduced herself and asked if she knew me. Little did I know that day what an important teacher, mentor and friend she would become in my life. Since that day, she affectionately refers to us as her Strays.

Mary was one of five sisters who founded the Virginia Waters Contemplative Centre 20 years ago. Sharing the Universe Story (our common creation story) has been their main focus. We are all one. There is no separation. There is no hierarchy.

Mary has spent countless hours teaching and listening to me and the other beautiful souls who have been attending the sacred listening and meditation circles I started with Leslie Ann Barron and Mary Ann Mooney at the centre. These circles have brought together people who may never have met before in a space that is so open, non judgemental and healing that it’s almost impossible to not leave up lifted and more aligned. The ripple effect of these circles is far reaching. I feel it and know it in my being.

I wanted to share some highlights of my learnings from Mary that I am embodying. 

1. We are all one and interconnected. 

2. We are all learners and teachers at the same. 

3. To always stay curious and amazed. 

4. To never be afraid to speak your truth as you know it even if it goes against the grain and especially if you don’t have the answers. Also listen to others who may be different.

5. That Love comes in many forms.

6. Community is so important and powerful. Build your community.
